Our Australian carbon footprint calculator is a free, step-by-step tool

It estimates your footprint for the period you choose, using the Australian Government’s National Greenhouse Accounts emission factors and published Australian data (ABS, Bureau of Meteorology and others) for averages.

What does our carbon footprint calculator do?

It gives you an educational estimate of your household or business carbon footprint for a month, quarter or year, using Australian Government emission factors and published Australian data.

What will I need to calculate my footprint?

About 5 to 10 minutes and, for the most accurate result, your own figures (electricity, gas, water, fuel or distances, flights). No figures to hand? Use the built-in Australian and state averages.

What time period is my footprint calculated over?

Whichever you choose: the past month, three months, or year.

How is my footprint calculated?

From the Australian Government’s National Greenhouse Accounts factors plus published Australian data (ABS, Bureau of Meteorology, AER), applied to what you enter.

How does my footprint compare to the average?

The calculator shows relevant Australian averages beside your figures, for reference.

Can I use the calculator for my business?

Yes. A business quick estimate is available now, and a detailed business calculation is coming soon.

Can I track my footprint over time?

Yes. Save a calculation to your account, then start a new one from a past result to see what has changed

I have solar panels, how do I account for this?

Enter the electricity you bought from the grid – that figure already reflects the benefit of any solar you used, because self-consumed solar lowers your bill. There’s a “Solar system” field to record how much your panels generated, but it’s shown for context only and isn’t subtracted again, to avoid double-counting.

I have an electric vehicle, how do I account for this?

Electric vehicles are not powered by liquid fuels and as such do not directly produce carbon emissions. If you charge at home, your EV’s running emissions are already captured in your household electricity, so don’t add it again as a vehicle. The vehicle section is for petrol, diesel, LPG, E10 and biodiesel. Just make sure you include your electricity use for the most accurate result.

If you charged your vehicle outside the home, you will need to consider whether this was from a renewable source (e.g. a solar charging station) or non-renewable (e.g. at a friend’s house who uses grid electricity). If you charged your car from a non-renewable energy source, you should include the kWh consumption in the electricity section of the calculator.

I live in a share house, how do I account for utilities?

Enter your share of each bill (electricity, gas, water). If you’re not sure of your share, use the average-household option for your state, or split the whole-of-house figure by the number of people.

I live in a rental property, how do I find my water consumption?

If you don’t receive a water bill (common when renting), choose the average option and the calculator uses the average for your state. If you do have your usage in kilolitres, you can enter it directly instead.

I grow my own fruit and/or vegetables, how do I account for this?

Food is estimated from your diet and your weekly food spend (or an itemised shop). Growing your own isn’t entered as a separate deduction, but if it means you spend less on food, enter your actual (lower) weekly spend and that’s reflected in your result.

I cycle and/or walk a lot, how do I account for this?

The emissions from walking, running, skating, and cycling are essentially zero, therefore using these as modes of transport is a great way to lower your carbon footprint. You only need to enter data for transport methods like cars, taxis, planes, buses and trains in your carbon footprint calculation.

How do I account for my clothes and other household items?

The calculator covers home energy, transport and travel, water, food and drinks, and waste. It doesn’t include a separate category for clothing or general household purchases, so those aren’t part of this estimate.

How can I reduce my carbon footprint?

The calculator is full of tips and practical steps to help lower your footprint.

Can I offset my carbon footprint with Regenerate Australia?

You can donate to match your footprint and support our native land restoration program. Your donation funds restoration and is not a carbon offset or ACCU retirement. Voluntary offsets are available to select partner organisations, so please get in touch for more information.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Regenerate Australia has Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status, so donations of $2 or more are tax deductible in Australia.
